Impact of Sea-Ice Decline on Wind Regimes in the Far North

We seek a motivated post-doctoral fellow to join a climate diagnostics group within the Graduate Program in Geography at York University, examining the historical and future impacts of sea-ice decline on wind regimes in the Hudson and James Bay Lowlands. The successful candidate will explore the linkage between reduced ice cover, changes in atmospheric stability and synoptic weather regimes and corresponding changes in wind speed and direction and participate in identifying potential impacts of these changes on northern peoples and ecosystems.

Qualifications:

The applicant must hold a PhD and be within five years of graduation with a specialization in Climate, Geophysical or Environmental Science and have demonstrated expertise in data processing and statistical analysis, strong organizational skills, excellent communication skills, and demonstrated success in producing peer-reviewed scientific publications. Experience in the analysis of NARR, NCEP and Regional Climate Model output and in the use of ESRI and MATLAB platforms is an asset.

Time commitment and salary:

The post-doctoral appointment, classified as a Post-Doctoral Visitor at York University, will be for one year. Salary is $CDN 40,500 plus benefits. We will begin reviewing applications on April 28, 2014, and will consider applicants until the position is filled. The start date for the position will be July 1, 2014. The successful applicant is also eligible to teach up to two one-semester undergraduate courses as a sessional lecturer, subject to availability and qualifications.
