Title
Connecting the Docs: Bridging the Gap Between Science and Policy with Film

MARK TERRY
Filmaker, Explorer

Abstract:

The presentation chronicles Mark Terry’s expeditions  in Antarctica as well as crossing the Northwest Passage documenting new scientific discoveries in the polar regions in two films:
The Polar Explorer
and The Antarctica Challenge: A Global Warning. Terry will discuss how these films became an integral part of the policy-making process at the UN climate summits in Copenhagen and Cancun.
The success of these presentations have resulted in a permanent exclusive partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme to bring climate-related scientific research each year to the COP conferences.
A screening of The Antarctica Challenge: A Global Warning will be included.

Mark Terry is a multiple award winning documentary filmmaker who holds the distinction of being the first filmmaker to document a crossing of the Northwest Passage through the seldom-navigated Prince of Wales Strait.
His work in this field has been recognized by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society who inducted him into their College of Fellows last November. Last year, he was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for his humanitarian efforts in promoting climate literacy worldwide. Mark works with the United Nations Environment Programme in producing a film series for delegates and negotiators attending the United Nations Framework Conventions on Climate Change and is a Community Leader with the David Suzuki Foundation
