Funding for Field Research in Northern Canada – Northern Scientific Training Program (NSTP)

Application Deadline: Friday November 8, 2013

For fifty years, Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) has supported Northern field research through the Northern Scientific Training Program. The purpose of the program is to provide graduate students and senior undergraduate students with direct Northern experience and training opportunities by offsetting the extra costs associated with doing Arctic research. The program is open to students of all disciplines, not only science related projects.

Students and a faculty adviser apply for NSTP funding through the Northern studies committee at their institution. At York University the committee is the Advisory Committee on Northern Studies. The online application form allows applicants to request funds to cover accommodation, food, travel to/from and within the north, freight and for translators or interpreters. Applications are ranked by the Committee before submission to Ottawa. Funding decisions are normally available in late February.
